- Communication of Treatment - Related Information
Adequate information should be presented before the start of treatment to the patient, and/or responsible parties. The presentation should include as appropriate, the review and consideration of the following:
- Diagnosis and treatment objectives
- Treatment and limiting factors
- Periodontal and oral hygiene considerations
- Temporomandibular joint considerations, including timely referral and treatment, if indicated.
- Integration with other dental and medical services
- Surgical considerations including implant procedures
- Orthodontic considerations if indicated
- Endodontic considerations if indicated
- Estimated treatment time
- Financial responsibility
- Risks and limitations of treatment plus alternative treatment plans
- Life expectancy of the treatment
- Future treatment considerations based on aging and other factors
- Appropriate and timely referral for specialty care
- Patient acceptance of risks if care is not completed
- Patient responsibilities during and after treatment, e.g., healing, recall, home care
- Approval of the diagnostic wax up which must be documented
- Cost and financial arrangements
Cases of this nature are strongly recommended to include the use of a written informed consent documents (see sample included) or a reasonably equivalent form. A written consent, including the above, will provide the patient, parent, or guardian with information about the possible risks of treatment so they may be compared with the anticipated benefits, including any alternative treatment plans.
